Bridges instead of walls: Los Angeles visits Berlin at B-LA Connect

Berlin currently has seventeen sister cities around the world; the first of those pairings was made in the mid-1960s with the mayor of Los Angeles. The art project B-LA Connect sets out to keep that exchange alive. Through June 23, 2019, twenty-two Berlin project spaces open their doors to colleagues from Los Angeles, who bring American artists to the German capital.

The Pavillon am Milchhof in Prenzlauer Berg welcomes Project River; Blake & Vargas in Kreuzberg hosts Big Pictures, whose exhibition elevates the book to the status of artwork; and the collective Tiger Strikes Asteroid takes over HilbertRaum in Neukölln with a retrospective that looks to the future. The exhibitions are accompanied by a program of performances, talks, film screenings and guided tours. The transatlantic friendship does not end with the finissage — next year the Berlin project spaces make their return visit to Los Angeles.
